How To Clean & Maintain Your Gold Rings After Purchase

Solid gold isn't hard to clean and maintain by any means, but you need to be smart about how you clean your jewelry and how you store it. Ultimately, gold rings should be cleaned based on whether or not they contain gemstones, and they should be kept out of the way of abrasive cleaning chemicals. If you hope to ensure that your gold ring lasts a lifetime, here is some some expert advice to consider:

Cleaning Plain Bands

Gold jewelry that contains absolutely no gemstones can easily be cleaned with a bit of soap and water. All you need to do is fill a small cereal bowl with lukewarm water and mix in a bit of mild dish soap. Leave your gold ring to soak for about 20 minutes, and then remove it and rinse off any soap residue with clean water. Dry off your jewelry with a microfiber cloth that doesn't have an abrasive texture that can mar the surface of your ring. Some may tell you to use ammonia, but stay away as it can discolor your jewelry in time.

Cleaning Gemstone Rings

Many gold rings often have gemstones, which is why they should never be soaked in water to clean them. Some gemstones are highly durable such as diamonds and sapphires, but many gemstones such as emerald or onyx shouldn't be exposed to water for long periods of time. Prepare the same solution of mild dish soap and lukewarm water as you would for plain gold bands, but instead of soaking your ring, gently dip it into the solution to dampen it. Rub the ring and the gemstones gently to clean them, and wipe any residue off with a soft cloth that has been dampened slightly with water. Leave your gold jewelry to air dry and only gently wipe them if necessary.

Polishing Your Gold

There are two things you can do to polish your gold ring: you can purchase a jewelry polishing cloth, or you can have it professionally polished by a jeweler. Though a polished gold ring looks positively radiant, this process is quite abrasive and each time you use it, you remove a thin layer of the gold. For this reason, you'll end up wearing down the gold eventually.

How To Safely Wear Your Ring

The basic idea is not to wear your ring when you come into contact with water or household cleaning chemicals. That means don't wear your ring in the shower or when swimming as tap and pool water contain chlorine that may damage or discolor the parts of your ring. It's also important that you don't subject your ring to any household chemicals or cleaners as they can irreversibly damage the gold. Additionally, you shouldn't wear your ring during any strenuous activities as gold is soft and malleable, making it one of the easiest to scratch metals.

Properly Storing Your Ring

As was mentioned above, gold is very easy to scratch and discolor, which is why it should be stored separately from other types of jewelry you own. Have a separate velvet lined jewelry box for your gold pieces or separate each one into a small lined pouch that can prevent them from being exposed to wear and tear.
